Executive Coaching has certainly evolved. When I began coaching, twenty-five years ago, it was the equivalent of wearing a scarlet letter. Indeed, coaching meant that you were a talented executive but that you had broken enough norms to land you in someone’s doghouse. The coach’s role was to help you to explore, understand, personalize and commit to new behaviors, consistent with the organization’s culture and its required norms. In short, coaching used to be a "fix-it" program. Today, coaching’s primary purpose isn’t geared toward those ‘in detention’, although that still occurs. Coaching is vectored toward high performing executives who are looking for insights, skills and guidance as they continue to grow themselves, their organizations, and the people whom they lead.

I often ask large groups to guess which profession spends the most money, per capita, on golf coaches. Lawyers? Doctors? Finance professionals? No. The answer is Golf Pros on the PGA tour; all of them! Their coaching encompasses the entire range, from managing head space to changing a swing. Indeed, executives receive coaching today for multiple reasons, from processing their experiences, to managing change, to managing in difficult times to interpersonal skill mastery, and more. And yes, the topics can range from organizational politics and positioning, to performance and productivity. The most important way to begin with coaching is to create clarity on the purpose and outcome of your engagement. I provide executives with opportunities to receive an outside, objective perspective with attention to your culture, your capability and even your commitment!
