Team Building, Development and Alignment

I help teams clarify their mission and purpose as a context for planning their tasks, activities and objectives.

Tasks→ Activities→ Objectives→ Goals→ Mission→ Purpose

I help teams to create clarity by aligning their day to day activities with their overall mission and purpose.  The accelerating pace of change in today's business environment often results in misaligned assumptions, misaligned activities and misaligned teams.

Teams today are focused on ‘leaning in’ to tasks and activities with rapid speed and efficiency. However, there is something to be said for ‘leaning back’ on occasion to test assumptions and ensure alignment. Teams need to have certainty on what they are doing, why they are doing it, how they are doing it, and how well they are getting it done.

Teams are comprised of people with various levels of capability and commitment.  That variance can become a source of tension, especially when left unchecked. Team building is an opportunity for people to engage each other with authenticity and genuineness.  It is a time to reflect on individual and team performance and participation, with an eye toward behaviors to start, stop and modify.

There are numerous reasons for team tension. Team development begins with an accurate assessment.  An assessment is not an inventory of behavioral symptoms. Rather it is a thorough examination of its cause.  There are five fundamentals causes to team tension and mitigated performance:

  1. Misalignment with strategic intent and market positioning … which can cause …
  2. Lack of alignment within and between organizations … which can cause …
  3. Tension between teams and disagreement on priorities … which can cause …
  4. Disagreement within teams on the 'why, how  and what’ …  which can cause …
  5. Execution challenges regarding how well objectives get accomplished … which can cause …
  6. Morale issues and a sense of learned helplessness … which can cause ….
  7. The need to step back and get an accurate diagnosis of the cause and the solution.

Finally, teams are made up of various personalities, each with a style that facilitates or detracts from building trusting relationships.  It’s important that team members have a structured analytical tool to gain awareness of each member’s individual style with prescriptions for the best ways to relate with each other, given those stylistic differences.

Teams, and their individual members, need the ability to understand their personalities and, more importantly, their personalities under pressure!
